EASY PAPER ORNAMENTS
I love DIY Christmas decorations but I tend to use more non traditional colours. Red and Green are definite classics but I prefer brighter and happier hues! The beauty of these pretty paper ornaments, is you can easily make them in any colour, no matter what your preferences are!
These are some of the easiest DIY ornaments I’ve ever made! You really only need 3 main supplies to make them yourself. They’re affordable, cute and you can make 1 in less than 20 minutes! They look amazing on the tree, wrapped up as a gift or even strung up as a lovely paper garland!
Supplies you’ll need to make them:
The full printable list of instructions is available at the end of this post, but here’s a list of affiliate links that will take you to products on amazon that are similar to the supplies I used to make these DIY Christmas ornaments!
- Colourful Cardstock/Paper
- Sparkly Pom Poms
- Coloured String/Embroidery Thread
- Bone Paper Folder (optional)
- Gluestick
- Glue Gun
To start this simple Christmas craft, grab a sheet of card stock in your favourite colour. You’ll also need a pair of scissors, a glue stick and something to trace around to make the circles.
You’ll also need some coloured string, a glue gun and a fuzzy pom pom!
For my circles I used a little plastic cup that measures 2 1/2 inches across. You can use a glass, a compass or anything you have on hand. The size of the circle will decide how big your ornament is going to be.
Trace around your cup/object with a pencil so you can easily erase any lines left over after cutting them.
Trace 5 circles on your coloured paper.
Cut out all 5 circles.
One by one, fold each circle in half. I used a paper folder to help make the folds really sharp – you don’t have to do this step if you don’t have one.
Constructing your Paper Ornament:
Once all your circles are folded in half, you can start gluing/stacking them together to create your paper ball.
TIP: use a glue stick instead of hot glue to secure your half circles. Glue sticks don’t dry right away and you’ll have more time to adjust your pieces so they match up perfectly!
Using a glue stick, roll glue over one side of one of your half circles.
Take a second half circle and place it directly on top of the one you just added glue to. Match it up exactly, then press down so they stick together.
When you unfold your two pieces it should look like the photo below, with two half circles on each side and one standing up in the middle.
Fold your circles back up and add glue to the top half circle just like you did with the first one.
Grab a third half circle and match it to the glued piece, as you did before. Press down to make sure it’s secure. You’re basically stacking all of the half circles one on top of the other with layers of glue in between.
Now your circle should be taking shape! Unfolded, your ornament should have 2 pieces sticking up instead of one, and you should have two half circles left.
Continue gluing and stacking your half circles on top of each other with the remaining 2 pieces. When you’re finished, your unfolded ball should have 6 pieces.
Finishing your Ornament:
Cut a length of string that’s 6 inches long.
Tie a knot in your string so it makes a loop.
Flatten your ball and open it to the unglued section. Add a small line of hot glue along the top of the crease in the centre.
Take your string loop and carefully lay the end with the knot down on top of the hot glue.
You don’t have to make a knot, I just found it made it a little easier to press down on the string so I didn’t burn my fingers!
Add some glue to one side of the open circle, then close the sides and press down to secure them. Your will now have 5 points instead of 6.
Now for the final touch! Add a small dab of hot glue to the centre on the bottom of the ornament.
Press your pom pom down on top of the glue and hold it for a few seconds.
Your paper pom pom ornament is complete! Now that you’ve made one, you’ll be able to knock out a bunch more in no time:)
I couldn’t stick to just one colour – naturally I made a bunch in brighter, happier hues.
I also tried to change up the string and pom pom colours just to add a little bit of contrast on each ornament. The more colour the better right?!
What type of paper works best?
I used a thicker card stock for this project and it worked perfectly! The card stock adds a durability to the ornaments, and makes them less delicate. Regular paper/construction paper will bend and tear more easily and they probably won’t hold up well over time.
What else can you use to decorate your paper ornaments?
If you feel like your ornaments need a little something extra, try adding rhinestones, or tiny pom poms. You could paint on them, add stickers or string some wooden beads on the bottom instead of the pom pom! There are so many ways to make them your own!
Easy Paper Pom Pom Ornaments
These easy paper ornaments are so colourful and make great gifts!
- Pencil
- Paper Folder (optional)
- Glue Stick
- Glue gun
- 1 sheet card stock ((any colour))
- 1 fuzzy pom pom
- 1 piece string ((6 inches))
- 1 2 1/2 inch plastic cup ((for tracing))
Start by tracing 5 circles onto a sheet of brightly coloured card stock.
Cut out each circle, then fold them each in half.
Using a glue stick, roll glue over one side of one of your folded half circles.
Take a second half circle and place it directly on top of the glued side of the first. Match it up exactly, then press down so they stick together.
Keeping your circles folded, repeat step 3 and add glue to the top of half circle #2. Add a third half circle on top of the glue and press down. There should be 3 half circles staked one on top of the other.
Stack all the rest of the half circles one on top of the other with layers of glue in between. When finished, the unfolded ball should have 6 half circles. Don't add glue to the last piece just yet.
Cut a 6 inch piece of string. Tie a knot at the bottom, forming a loop.
Flatten the ball and open it to the unglued section. Add a small line of hot glue along the top of the crease in the centre.
Carefully place the knotted end of the string loop on the hot glue, leaving the rest of the loop for hanging.
Add some glue to one of the sides and close the ball – pressing down to secure the last section. The ball will now have 5 points instead of 6.
Add a small dab of hot glue to the bottom centre of the paper ball. Add a fuzzy pom pom on top of the glue and hold for a few seconds to secure it.
Your paper pom pom ornament is complete!
