These flavoured and tinted lip balms smell SO GOOD and have just a hint of colour! With a few simple supplies and some homemade labels, you can make your own lip balms in less than 10 minutes! With countless colour and scent combinations these hydrating lip tints make amazing gifts and are a fantastic way to customize your own lip products!
Homemade lip balm is really easy to make and there are so many ways to make them! Most DIY lip balm recipes only call for 2-3 ingredients, but this one is extra special and a little more exciting! By adding fruity flavouring and colourful chunks of old lipsticks, these natural balms go from basic to beautiful!
For an extra extra special touch, add a custom label to really personalize your creations! Make sure you measure the diameter of the top of your tins to be sure your labels fit. I designed mine with Canva (so fun!) and had them printed professionally. You can totally skip that step and print your own at home too! I just LOVE how the labels look and that you can easily tell what flavour/colour is in each tin!

FLAVOURED AND TINTED LIP BALMS
The full printable recipe is available at the end of this post, but here’s a list of links that will take you to products on amazon that are similar to the supplies I used to make these.
- White Beeswax Pellets
- Coconut Oil
- Flavouring
- Lipstick
- Lip Balm Tins
- Small Plastic Beakers
- Popsicle Stick/Small Spatula
This recipe is really simple! All you need is some white beeswax, coconut oil, a chunk or two of an old or cheap lipstick and some flavouring! Fruity flavours work really well, especially with bright colours!
Add 2 Tbsp of beeswax and 2 Tbsp of coconut oil to a microwave safe bowl. Microwave for about 60 seconds (this will vary depending on how powerful your microwave is!)
Remove the bowl from the microwave. Using a small spatula or popsicle stick, stir to melt any remaining pellets. They should dissolve into the mixture within seconds. If the pellets aren’t fully dissolved, microwave them in bursts of 30 seconds until melted.
Once the two are fully combined, add a chunk of lipstick. The more lipstick you add the more pigmented your lip balm will be. For this recipe, about 1 inch should be plenty! Don’t be afraid to use a really bright shade. The end result will actually be very sheer and not nearly as bold as it looks in the tin!
Pop the bowl back into the microwave for another 30 seconds to melt the lipstick. Stir again to mix the colour into the beeswax/oil mixture.
Finally, add 1 full tsp of flavouring and mix one last time. These flavourings are very concentrated, so you don’t need much, and they add such a sweet and juicy scent/flavour to the finished product! They have a TON of flavours to choose from and are relatively inexpensive so you can easily mix it up and make a few different versions.
Now you’re ready to pour! Have all three of your tins open and ready to go! You have to work fast here since your wax will start to cool as soon as you take it out of the microwave!
Carefully transfer the liquid from the bowl into one of the plastic cylinders. Then fill each of your tins to the top! This recipe should give you just enough to completely fill 3 tins. The spout on the cylinder helps make the pour more precise. You can avoid spilling and are able to add just the right amount to each tin.
Leave your tins untouched for about 10-15 minutes, giving the balms enough time to completely cool off before handling them.
Voila! Your DIY lip balms are complete! It was almost too easy wasn’t it?! Add a personalized label for that extra special finishing touch!
White vs. Yellow Beeswax
White beeswax is pure and unbleached which makes it the better choice when adding any kind of colour! This way, any shade you choose will look brighter and more accurate to the original. Yellow wax has been heated up and filtered and varies in colour from light to dark. While you can totally still use yellow wax to make lip balm, the yellow hue may slightly alter the final result, and your lipstick shade may not look exactly the same. Both varieties have anti-inflammatory properties, are moisturizing, soothing AND help to lock in moisture.
Substitutions to make Vegan flavoured and tinted lip balms
If you are vegan and can’t use beeswax you can easily substitute for a vegetable based wax like soy instead. It should perform just as well. As for the scent/flavour, using a few drops of your favourite essential oil should do the trick. Typically, essential oils are cruelty-free AND vegan-friendly since they have a higher concentration of plant oils! Last but not least, use a vegan lipstick for a splash of colour!
