DIY FELT CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS
Christmas 2020 is on its way! I’ll be honest, I wish I was more excited. With everything going on in the world, I have no idea what the holiday’s will look like this year. Even though times are uncertain, I decided to try my best to get into the spirit and try some new Christmas DIY ideas!
One of the easiest ways to get crafty during the holidays is to make your own ornaments. There’s so much inspiration out there. I had a ton of felt lying around so I made some plush decorations for my tree!
These are actually pretty easy to make and you only need a few simple supplies!
Supplies you’ll need:
The full printable list of instructions is available at the end of this post, but here’s a list of affiliate links that will take you to products on amazon and Etsy that are similar to the supplies I used!
Start by grabbing any colour of felt, some string and a cotton ball. You’ll also need a good pair of scissors and a glue gun!
I love Etsy and try to support fellow makers whenever I can. The idea for this project started with a printable template I found from Magic Pattern Shop. It has a ton of Christmas shapes (large and small) so you’re covered no matter what you’re making. You don’t have to use a template, but it makes things a bit easier:)
Choose a shape from the template (or cut your own.) Try starting with a simple shape. The curvier ones are a little bit harder to cut perfectly. Always start with the easiest ones then work your way up!
Cutting your Shapes:
Grab a sheet of felt and measure out enough space to fit 2 of the paper shapes. Use a pen to trace around each one.
Using a good pair of scissors, cut them out.
Assembling your Ornament:
When both of your shapes are cut, grab your string and cut a piece that measures 8 inches long.
Even up the two ends and tie a double knot so you have a loop.
Place the knot of your loop inside and at the top of one of your cut-outs.
Add a small dab of hot glue just under the knot and press it down to secure it to the felt.
Next, sticking as close to the perimeter as you can, add a small strip of hot glue.
Match the second felt shape to the first and press it down on top of the glue. Add another line of glue bit by bit around the felt shape.
Leave about an inch and a half unglued so there’s a hole in your ornament.
Next, take a cotton ball and unravel it. Pull it apart so it’s larger and fluffier.
Using a pen or pencil, stuff the fluffed up cotton ball into the hole in the ornament. Try to spread it evenly inside so the outside looks uniform.
When you’re happy with the look of the ornament, seal up the hole with a bit of hot glue.
Your felt ornament is complete! Now you can make a bunch more in different styles and colours!
Decorating your felt Christmas Ornaments:
This step is totally optional! If you feel like jazzing them up, grab some pom poms or anything else you want to add decoration. Use mini pom poms and glue them around the ornament in different amounts so each one looks a little different.
These cute little ornaments are so soft and look really cute hanging on the tree! With so many ways to decorate them, the sky’s the limit on what you can create!
The tiny pom poms add a little extra pizazz don’t you think?
Make a whole set and give them as a cute handmade gift!
What else can you use to decorate your ornaments?
There’s a ton of other materials that could work! You could wrap them in yarn, pipe cleaners or even ribbon. Try painting on them, or if you’re handy with a needle and thread you could add a simple embroidered design! You could even use letter stickers to add a monogram for a customized look!
How to Make Felt Ornaments

- Scissors
- Glue gun
- Pen/Pencil
- 1 sheet felt ((any colour))
- 1 8' piece string ((any colour))
- 1 cotton ball
- tiny pom poms ((optional))
- ornament template ((optional))
Choose a shape from the paper template and cut it out. Thicker paper/cardstock works best.
Grab a sheet of felt and measure enough space to fit 2 of the paper shape. Use a pen to trace around each one.
Cut the shapes out. They should be mirror images of each other.
Cut a piece of string that measures 8 inches long.
Even up the two ends and tie a double knot to make a loop.
Lay the knot of the loop inside and at the top of the first of the felt cut-outs.
Add a small dab of hot glue just under the knot and press it down to secure it to the felt.
Sticking as close to the perimeter as possible, add a strip of hot glue along the edge.
Take the second felt shape, and match it to the first. Press it down on top of the glue, sandwiching the string in between. Add another line of glue. Continue to glue the top shape to the bottom one, moving bit by bit around the edge.
Leave about an inch and a half unglued so there's a small opening in the ornament.
Take a cotton ball and unravel it. Pull it apart so it's larger and fluffier.
Using a pen or pencil, stuff the fluffed up cotton ball into the hole in the ornament. Try to spread it evenly inside so the outside looks uniform.
Seal up the hole with a small line of hot glue.
Your felt ornament is complete and ready to be decorated!
